About
Juice of the European elderberry — deeply pigmented, antioxidant-rich botanical. Safe in processed cosmetic grade; raw fruit contains some toxins and must be properly prepared.
Sambucus nigra (European elder) fruit juice is used as a skin-conditioning and antioxidant botanical. Ripe elderberries are rich in anthocyanins (cyanidin-3-glucoside and -sambubioside), vitamin C, and flavonols — which give the juice strong antioxidant activity in vitro. CosIng lists it for skin conditioning; no specific CIR review. Importantly, raw or under-ripe elderberries contain cyanogenic glycosides (sambunigrin) and lectins that can cause nausea if ingested; cosmetic-grade juice is prepared from ripe, heat- or enzymatically-processed fruit, which eliminates this risk. Topically it is considered gentle; rare contact reactions in Sambucus-sensitive users are reported. Like all fruit juices it requires thorough preservation.
