About
A water-soluble version of CoQ10 — it works as an antioxidant that may support skin energy metabolism. Newer form, so evidence is thinner than for classic ubiquinone.
Disodium ubiquinone is a water-compatible disodium salt derivative of ubiquinone (coenzyme Q10). Native ubiquinone is lipid-soluble and poorly penetrates aqueous formulas; the disodium form was developed to enable incorporation into water-based serums and emulsions. It functions as an antioxidant by quenching reactive oxygen species. CoQ10 itself has decades of oral supplement safety data, but this specific salt form is a newer cosmetic ingredient without an independent SCCS or CIR opinion. No GHS hazard classification identified at cosmetic use levels. Claims of mitochondrial support in topical use remain more theoretical than clinically established.
Function
Skin benefits
- Water-soluble form of CoQ10 delivers antioxidant activity
- Supports mitochondrial-style radical quenching in skin
- Better formulation compatibility than lipid CoQ10
Known concerns
- Limited independent dermal penetration data
- Newer specialty salt form without long regulatory track record
- Efficacy claims often exceed clinical evidence
