About
Disperse Red 17 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Disperse Red 17 (C.I. 11210, 1-[(2-methoxy-4-nitrophenyl)azo]-N-ethyl-3-nitrobenzenemethanamine) is an azo dye that may undergo reductive cleavage to release aromatic amines, some of which are known carcinogens (e.g., aniline derivatives). The EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex III places restrictions on azo dyes used in hair dyes due to their sensitization potential and potential to form carcinogenic amine metabolites. Concentration limits and restrictions on oxidative use conditions apply.
Skin benefits
- Provides red coloration in hair dye and temporary color formulations
Known concerns
- Azo dye — risk of carcinogenic aromatic amine formation on reduction
- Skin and respiratory sensitizer
