About

Ethyl 8'-apo-.beta.-caroten-8'-oate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Ethyl 8'-apo-beta-caroten-8'-oate (also known as apo carotenoid ester or ethyl apo carotenate) is a C30 apocarotenoid derived from beta-carotene cleavage, used as a yellow-orange colorant and antioxidant in cosmetic formulations. Apocarotenoids are reviewed by SCCS for skin absorption and systemic exposure; the ethyl ester enhances lipid solubility compared to free apocarotenoid acids. At typical cosmetic concentrations (<0.1%), systemic absorption is minimal. The ingredient differs from retinol (vitamin A) in that it lacks the terminal hydroxyl group required for retinoid receptor binding, reducing teratogenic concern, though caution is still advised in pregnancy.

Skin benefits

  • Provides yellow-orange color to cosmetic products
  • Antioxidant properties may protect skin from free radical damage
  • May support skin barrier function at low concentrations

Known concerns

  • Structurally related to vitamin A - trace amounts of vitamin A activity possible
  • Pregnancy caution - vitamin A derivatives generally restricted
  • May contribute to cumulative vitamin A intake from other cosmetic sources
