Gallium Maltolate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Gallium maltolate is a gallium(III) complex with maltol (3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-pyrone) as ligand. Gallium is a group 13 metal with pharmacological activity including anti-inflammatory effects and bone uptake similar to calcium. Gallium nitrate is an approved drug (Ganite) for hypercalcemia of malignancy. However, topical cosmetic safety data for gallium maltolate are very limited. The SCCS has not assessed this specific compound, and it does not appear in CosIng. The main concerns are potential metal accumulation and insufficient sensititisation data, which bring the score down from the safest tier despite gallium itself being a trace-element with relatively low acute toxicity.

Skin benefits

  • Potential anti-inflammatory activity (pharmacological research)
  • Gallium's bone-seeking properties may support skin mineralisation

Known concerns

  • No EU CosIng listing or SCCS assessment
  • Limited topical safety data for cosmetic use
  • Metal compound — potential for tissue accumulation
  • Insufficient sensitisation and repeat-dose toxicity data
