About

Licorice root prenylflavonoids, potent antioxidant compounds from the root of the licorice plant, known for skin-soothing and brightening benefits.

Glycyrrhiza uralensis root prenylflavonoids (e.g., licochalcone A, glabridin) are isolated from licorice root and are distinct from glycyrrhizin, the compound responsible for licorice's mineralocorticoid effects. Glabridin and licochalcone A have been extensively studied in skin care with good safety profiles. However, the ingredient contains minor constituents with potential hormonal activity, and the SCCS has noted that high-purity licorice extracts used in skin-lightening applications require purity control. Not restricted in EU Annexes, but specific glabridin purity standards are recommended.

Skin benefits

  • Licochalcone A is a potent anti-inflammatory for rosacea and acne-prone skin
  • Glabridin inhibits tyrosinase and prevents post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Antioxidant prenylflavonoids reduce UV-induced melanogenesis

Known concerns

  • Minor constituents may have weak hormonal (endocrine) activity; monitoring advisable
  • Glabridin quality varies significantly between extracts; purity control required
  • High-purity licochalcone A extracts are preferred over whole-root preparations
