Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
C4 hydrocarbon streams contaminated with >0.1% butadiene are prohibited in EU cosmetics due to butadiene's mutagenic and carcinogenic classification.
Hydrocarbons C4 (CAS 87741-01-3) refer to a cut of petroleum hydrocarbons containing four carbon atoms per molecule. If contaminated with more than 0.1% w/w 1,3-butadiene, this stream falls under EU Annex II prohibition for cosmetic use. Butadiene's status as a Group 1 carcinogen and H340/H350 classified mutagen makes any contamination above this threshold unacceptable in any consumer product, particularly those applied to the skin.
Known concerns
- EU Annex II — butadiene contamination (>0.1% prohibited)
- Known human carcinogen (butadiene)
- Germ cell mutagen (H340)
