About
Woad leaf powder — the foliar counterpart of woad root, carrying indigo/indirubin precursors and mild anti-inflammatory potential.
Isatis tinctoria leaf powder is the milled foliage of woad, historically the primary European source of indigo dye. In cosmetics it contributes indole precursors and flavonoids that give the material a mild anti-inflammatory and skin-conditioning character. Topical dossiers based on indirubin in psoriasis are favourable but focus on root-derived indirubin rather than the crude leaf. EU CosIng lists the ingredient; no CIR monograph. Deep pigment makes staining a practical concern, and there is limited cosmetic-specific toxicology, so the score stays in mid-yellow. No IARC classification.
Skin benefits
- Indigo/indirubin precursor content for anti-inflammatory potential
- Traditional topical use on eczema and psoriasis
- Mild skin-conditioning effect
Known concerns
- Deep blue/green pigment can stain
- Limited modern cosmetic safety data
- Indole alkaloid content warrants low-level use
