About
Isobavachalcone is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Iso Bavachalone is a prenylated chalcone extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia (Babchi), a plant used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Chalcones are characterised by an open-chain flavonoid structure (benzylidene acetophenone) and are known for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and tyrosinase-inhibitory activities relevant to skincare. In vitro studies show anti-melanogenic activity via MITF pathway inhibition. However, as a natural product with limited toxicological data and known photosensitising potential in the parent plant, it falls in the 70s rather than the highest tier. It is not listed on EU Annex II or III, suggesting it is not a banned or severely restricted substance.
Skin benefits
- Antioxidant activity — neutralises free radicals
- Anti-inflammatory — inhibits prostaglandin and cytokine pathways
- Anti-melanogenic — tyrosinase and MITF pathway inhibition (potential skin brightening)
- Potential for treating hyperpigmentation and post-inflammatory pigmentation
Known concerns
- Limited human safety data for chronic topical cosmetic use
- Known photosensitising potential from plant source
- Natural product variability in composition
- No SCCS assessment specific to cosmetic use
- Potential for cross-reactivity with other chalcones
