About
Isosteareth-50 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Isosteareth-50 (CAS 52292-17-8) is the polyethylene glycol ether of isostearyl alcohol (a branched C18 alcohol) with an average of 50 ethylene oxide units, making it a hydrophilic nonionic surfactant with strong water-binding capacity. The branched isostearyl chain provides superior emolliency and skin-feel compared to linear chain analogues, while the high degree of ethoxylation (50 units) makes it water-soluble and mild. EU cosmetic regulations permit ethoxylated fatty alcohols with appropriate purity specifications. The branched structure reduces crystallization and improves formulation aesthetics. Typical use in rinse-off and leave-on products is safe; the 50-EO unit count suggests low residual ethylene oxide concern relative to shorter ethoxylates.
Skin benefits
- Strong water-binding humectant properties
- Emollient and skin-softening effects from isostearyl chain
- Nonionic surfactant with mild cleansing action
Known concerns
- Ethylene oxide purity controls required per SCCS guidance
- High HLB value may cause some defatting of skin with excessive use
