About
Juice of cultivated/wild lettuce — a gentle, hydrating leaf juice. The bitter sap of the wild form contains lactones, so processed cosmetic grade is preferred.
Lactuca scariola sativa (wild/prickly lettuce as transitioned to the cultivated L. sativa group) leaf juice is used as a skin-conditioning and hydrating botanical. It is largely water, with small amounts of flavonoids (quercetin glycosides), vitamin C, and mineral salts. The latex-like sap of wild Lactuca species contains bitter sesquiterpene lactones (lactucin, lactucopicrin) that can cause contact sensitization in Asteraceae-sensitive users; cosmetic-grade juice is drawn from cultivated leaves and is essentially free of the bitter latex. CosIng lists it for skin conditioning. No CIR monograph. Overall safety at typical use levels is good; preservation is the usual formulation concern.
