About

Magnesium Laureth-3 Sulfosuccinate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

This ingredient combines the mildness advantage of magnesium counterions (versus sodium) with the gentleness of the sulfosuccinate head group and a short 3-mol ethoxylated lauryl chain. Magnesium laureth sulfosuccinates have been used extensively in baby-shampoo and sensitive-skin product lines. EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 does not list this specific substance in any annex, treating it as a standard permitted surfactant. The short EO chain minimizes concerns about residual ethylene oxide while the sulfosuccinate linkage is more hydrolysis-resistant than sulfate esters.

Skin benefits

  • Excellent cleansing with minimal disruption to skin barrier
  • Magnesium counterion contributes to reduced compared to sodium-based surfactants

Known concerns

  • Still an anionic surfactant — may cause transient dryness with overuse
  • Avoid eye contact to prevent mild stinging
