About
Mecamylamine (INN) is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Mecamylamine is a non-competitive antagonist of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), historically used as an antihypertensive drug (ganglion blocker). It causes blockade of autonomic ganglia leading to profound hypotension, constipation, and urinary retention. It crosses the blood-brain barrier causing central nervous system effects. As a pharmaceutical agent with significant pharmacological activity and no cosmetic function, mecamylamine is not listed in EU CosIng as an approved cosmetic ingredient. Any pharmacological agent acting on neuronal receptors is categorically prohibited in cosmetic products under EU safety assessment principles.
Known concerns
- Neuronal nicotinic receptor antagonist
