About
A natural gas condensate fraction containing trace benzene, classified as a presumed human carcinogen and banned from cosmetic formulations under EU Annex II.
Natural gas condensates are recovered during natural gas production and contain a variable proportion of aromatic hydrocarbons including benzene. Because the benzene content can exceed 0.1% w/w, these streams fall under EU REACH benzene restrictions (Index 601-020-00-8). The Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 prohibits the use of benzene-containing streams in any cosmetic product.
Known concerns
- Contains >0.1% benzene — EU Annex II restricted CMR substance
- Category 1A carcinogen under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008
- Variable composition makes risk assessment difficult
- Flammable gas condensate with inhalation exposure risk
