Neryl butyrate (CAS 999-40-6) is an ester of neral (a rose-scented monoterpene aldehyde) and butyric acid. It is listed in the IFRA Code of Practice and is not specifically restricted in EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annexes II or III. Naturally occurring in essential oils such as lemongrass and verbena, it has a long history of use in food and cosmetic flavour/fragrance applications. As a terpene derivative, it may require allergen declaration under EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex III/138 if present above 100 ppm in leave-on products (0.01% threshold for fragrance allergens).
