About
One of the most ethoxylated variants in the series, this surfactant has substantially reduced endocrine disruption risk but is still subject to EU cosmetic restrictions due to its nonylphenyl structural heritage.
Nonoxynol-120 is a polyethylene glycol mono(4-nonylphenyl) ether with an exceptionally high average of 120 ethylene oxide units, making it highly hydrophilic and significantly reducing its capacity to degrade to nonylphenol. Its regulatory classification under EU REACH Annex XVII entry 46a treats it equivalently to other nonylphenol ethoxylates, restricting cosmetic use. The high ethoxylation imparts a safety profile closer to polyethylene glycols, though residual environmental concern persists.
Known concerns
- EU REACH Annex XVII restriction in cosmetic products
- Trace environmental persistence
- Aquatic organism chronic exposure concerns
