About

Though more ethoxylated than its lower-numbered counterparts, this surfactant is still restricted in EU cosmetics due to persistent endocrine-disrupting properties of the nonylphenyl group.

Nonoxynol-15 is a polyethylene glycol mono(4-nonylphenyl) ether with an average of 15 ethylene oxide units. The higher ethoxylation provides some mitigation of direct endocrine activity, yet the nonylphenyl moiety can still degrade, and the compound falls under EU REACH Annex XVII restrictions for cosmetic applications. Environmental concerns regarding aquatic toxicity and persistence apply across the entire Nonoxynol series.

Known concerns

  • EU REACH Annex XVII restriction in cosmetic products
  • Endocrine disruption potential (nonylphenyl source)
  • Aquatic toxicity and environmental persistence
  • Potential bioaccumulation
