Octyldodeceth-5 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Octyldodeceth-5 is an ethoxylated ether of 2-octyldodecanol with an average of 5 moles of ethylene oxide per molecule. Its intermediate EO degree gives it amphiphilic character (HLB ~10), useful as a co-emulsifier in both W/O and O/W systems. The branched 2-octyldodecyl group provides good emolliency. EU Cosmetics Regulation permits its use without restriction. As a mid-low EO ether, it has somewhat greater surfactant activity and skin interaction than higher-EO variants, warranting caution in leave-on formulations for sensitive skin.
Skin benefits
- Co-emulsifier for stable formulations
- Emollient properties from branched alcohol
- Good for rich, protective textures
Known concerns
- Greater skin interaction than high-EO variants
- Potential trace EO/1,4-dioxane contamination
