About
A nonionic surfactant derived from oleyl alcohol ethoxylated with 9 ethylene oxide units, used as an emulsifier and solubilising agent in skin care and cleansing products.
Oleth-9 (polyethylene glycol monooleyl ether, 9 EO) is a member of the Oleth series of surfactants derived from natural oleyl alcohol. It is listed without restriction in EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex I. The 9-unit ethylene oxide chain provides a good balance of water solubility and mildness. As with all Oleth and PEG ether ingredients, SCCS guidance recommends monitoring for 1,4-dioxane residual as a manufacturing byproduct of the ethoxylation process.
Skin benefits
- Excellent solubilising and emulsifying agent
- Improves formulation stability and skin feel
Known concerns
- Standard 1,4-dioxane monitoring per SCCS required
- Generally mild; occasional mild irritation reported at high concentrations
