About

A polyethylene glycol ether of sorbitol esterified with six lauric acid units, used as a skin conditioning emollient that provides a lightweight, non-greasy sensory profile.

Sorbeth-2 Hexalaurate is the hexaester of lauric acid (C12 saturated fatty acid) with a polyethylene glycol ether of sorbitol containing an average of 2 moles of ethylene oxide, giving it both lipophilic and hydrophilic character. The low PEG degree (2) means minimal concern for 1,4-dioxane trace contamination compared to higher-PEG ingredients. The restriction flags citing ozone-layer depletion are compliance indicators, not toxicological ones; lauric acid and sorbitol are naturally derived and the ingredient is not restricted under EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annexes II or III. Hexaesterification gives the molecule a higher molecular weight and slower skin absorption, reducing systemic exposure risk.

Function

SKIN CONDITIONING - EMOLLIENT

Skin benefits

  • Lightweight emollient that conditions and softens skin without heavy residue
  • Hexaester structure provides good spreadability and skin feel

Known concerns

  • Restriction flags referencing historic ozone-layer regulations (compliance flags, non-toxicological)
  • High degree of esterification may make the ingredient prone to hydrolysis in very watery formulations
