About
A PEG ester of palmitic acid with 20 moles of EO, functioning as a hydrophilic emulsifier and solubilizer with good skin tolerance.
PEG-20 Palmitate is the polyethylene glycol (20 mol EO average) ester of hexadecanoic acid (palmitic acid). With an HLB of approximately 15-16, it is an effective O/W emulsifier and oil solubilizer. The high EO degree significantly reduces the irritant potential of the fatty acid moiety. The EU Cosmetics Regulation lists it without restriction; it is not on any annex requiring limitation. High-EO palmitates are considered safe for leave-on and rinse-off cosmetic formulations at normal use concentrations.
Skin benefits
- Hydrophilic emulsifier and solubilizer
- Conditions and smooths skin
- Low irritation at cosmetic concentrations
Known concerns
- Potential trace EO/1,4-dioxane contamination from manufacturing
