About
A PEG ester of lauric acid with 20 moles of EO, functioning as a hydrophilic emulsifier and surfactant with low skin irritation potential.
PEG-20 Laurate is the polyethylene glycol (20 mol EO average) ester of dodecanoic acid (lauric acid). Lauric acid's shorter C12 chain (compared to C18 stearic acid) gives this ingredient different physical properties and a lighter skin feel. The high EO degree (HLB ~16) makes it water-soluble and suitable for O/W emulsions. EU Cosmetics Regulation permits its use without restriction. PEG-20 Laurate is used in both leave-on and rinse-off products and is considered mild with low sensitization potential.
Skin benefits
- Lightweight emulsifier for fluid textures
- Low irritation and sensitization potential
- Good for leave-on and rinse-off products
Known concerns
- Potential trace EO/1,4-dioxane contamination from manufacturing
