About
A higher-degree PEG ester of isostearic acid with 30 moles of EO, serving as a hydrophilic emulsifier and skin-tolerant surfactant in cosmetic formulations.
PEG-30 Isostearate is the polyethylene glycol (30 mol EO average) ester of isostearic acid, a branched C18 fatty acid. The high degree of ethoxylation gives it strong hydrophilic character (HLB ~16) and makes it an effective O/W emulsifier. The branched fatty acid structure reduces packing efficiency and crystallization, resulting in a smoother skin feel. The EU Cosmetics Regulation lists it without restriction; the high EO degree minimizes skin penetration and irritation risk. It is considered well-tolerated on skin.
Skin benefits
- Hydrophilic O/W emulsifier
- Smooth, non-greasy skin feel
- Good skin tolerance from branched fatty acid
Known concerns
- Potential trace EO/1,4-dioxane contamination from manufacturing
