PEG-4 STEARATE

Good
Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A lower-degree PEG ester of stearic acid with 4 moles of EO, functioning as a lipophilic emulsifier for water-in-oil formulations.
PEG-4 Stearate is the polyethylene glycol (4 mol EO average) monoester of stearic acid. With a lower degree of ethoxylation, it has a more lipophilic character (HLB ~9) and is commonly used in W/O emulsions and cleansing bars. The EU Cosmetics Regulation permits its use; it is not subject to specific restrictions. As a low-EO ester, it has greater potential for skin interaction than higher-EO variants, and may be slightly more irritating to sensitive skin or eyes in concentrated form.
Skin benefits
- Lipophilic emulsifier for W/O systems
- Contributes to rich texture in protective creams
Known concerns
- Greater skin interaction than higher-EO variants
- Potential trace EO/1,4-dioxane contamination
