About
A highly ethoxylated Polysorbate 40 variant (40 mol EO) used as a solubilising surfactant and emulsifier in a wide range of aqueous cosmetic formulations.
PEG-40 Sorbitan Laurate is a highly ethoxylated polysorbate emulsifier with strong surfactant and solubilising properties. It is not restricted under EU cosmetics law. The elevated EO degree (40) increases water solubility and the free PEG fraction. PEGs themselves are extensively studied and considered safe; however, the European Medicines Agency and cosmetics regulators have noted that residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane in PEGylated ingredients require quality control. No specific EU maximum concentration is set for this ingredient.
Skin benefits
- Excellent solubiliser for hydrophobic ingredients
- Versatile emulsifier for clear and aqueous formulations
Known concerns
- Potential trace 1,4-dioxane from ethoxylation (EU-regulated impurity)
- Elevated free PEG content from high EO degree
