About
A mid-high molecular weight polyethylene glycol (~45 EO units) functioning as a water-soluble emollient, humectant, and solvent in cosmetic formulations, particularly in products requiring smooth texture.
PEG-45 is a polyethylene glycol polymer with approximately 45 moles of ethylene oxide per molecule. At this intermediate molecular weight, it retains some surfactant character while being sufficiently large to minimize skin penetration. The ingredient is used as a solvent, humectant, and emollient in cosmetic formulations. EU Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 does not restrict PEG-45 specifically, though as an ethoxylated compound it is subject to standard purity requirements. The SCCS has assessed PEG compounds as safe for cosmetic use when manufactured to appropriate purity standards.
Skin benefits
- Water-soluble emollient that improves product texture
- Humectant properties help retain skin moisture
- Acts as a solvent for oil-soluble cosmetic ingredients
Known concerns
- Possible 1,4-dioxane residual from ethoxylation
- May enhance penetration of other ingredients into skin
