About
A high-molecular-weight polyethylene glycol used as a viscosity-controlling agent and humectant that helps products maintain their texture and retain moisture over time.
PEG-500 is a polymer of ethylene oxide with an average of 500 repeating units, giving it a high molecular weight. EU Cosmetics Regulation permits PEGs of this type without specific concentration limits; however, manufacturers must ensure the final product is free from harmful levels of residual monomers. High EO polymers are generally well-tolerated and show minimal skin penetration due to their large molecular size.
Skin benefits
- Humectant properties help retain moisture in skin formulations
- Viscosity-controlling agent improves product texture and stability
Known concerns
- Residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane must be monitored and kept below regulatory thresholds
- High molecular weight reduces but does not eliminate skin absorption concerns in damaged barrier
