About
A cationic polymeric conditioning agent used primarily in hair care products to improve combability and reduce static. Generally considered safe with low irritation potential.
Polyquaternium-18 is a cationic polymeric quaternary ammonium compound (INN: copolymer of dimethylallylammonium chloride and acrylamide) used as an antistatic agent and hair-conditioning polymer in cosmetic formulations. While not specifically restricted under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, polymeric quaternary ammonium compounds may occasionally show sensitization potential at high concentrations; the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has assessed similar polyquaterniums with favorable conclusions at typical use concentrations.
Skin benefits
- Provides antistatic and conditioning effects
- Improves combability and reduces flyaway
Known concerns
- Possible sensitization at high concentrations (uncommon)
- Not typically used in skin-care leave-on products — primarily a hair-care ingredient
