About
Denatured ethyl alcohol for cosmetic use, offering antimicrobial and solvent properties but with drying and irritant potential at high concentrations.
SD Alcohol 1 is ethyl alcohol co-denatured with methyl alcohol and a denatonium benzoate, MIBK, nitropropane, or methyl n-butyl ketone co-solvent per 27CFR21 US ATF regulations, making it unfit for beverage use. In cosmetics it functions as a volatile antimicrobial solvent and viscosity-reducer. EU Regulation 1223/2009 permits denatured alcohol in cosmetics but restricts concentrations in leave-on products due to barrier disruption and irritation risk. The methyl alcohol co-denaturant adds toxicological concern at high systemic exposure.
Skin benefits
- Broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservation
- Quick-dry solvent for improved product aesthetics
- Reduces viscosity for easier application
Known concerns
- Drieskin barrier with repeated or high-concentration use
- Volatile – potential respiratory irritant in poorly ventilated use
- Enhances dermal penetration of other ingredients
- Methyl alcohol co-denaturant adds oral toxicity concern
