About
A coal-derived light solvent naphtha with potential benzene content above the regulatory threshold, prohibited for cosmetic use under EU law due to its carcinogenic constituents.
Coal tar solvent naphtha is obtained from coal carbonization and tar processing, comprising aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, and xylenes. The presence of benzene at levels exceeding 0.1% w/w triggers the EU Annex II restriction for benzene under the Cosmetics Regulation. Coal tar-derived streams additionally contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are themselves regulated carcinogens.
Known concerns
- Contains >0.1% benzene — EU Annex II restricted CMR substance
- Category 1A carcinogen under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008
