About
A coal tar-derived hair dye (CI 12150) with significant safety concerns including carcinogenic potential; restricted in EU.
Solvent Red 1 (CI 12150) is a coal tar-derived azo dye used as a hair dye intermediate. Under EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex III, it is restricted for use only in oxidative hair dye formulations with a maximum concentration after mixing. Azo dyes that can cleave to form aromatic amines are under regulatory scrutiny due to carcinogenicity concerns. Several azo colorants are listed in EU Annex II as prohibited substances for cosmetic use; Solvent Red 1 is permitted under specific restrictions but must carry label warnings.
Known concerns
- Restricted hair dye use only per EU Annex III
- Azo dye — potential cleavage to carcinogenic amines
- Label warning required
- May cause mutations in bacterial assays (Ames test positive)
