About

A fusion of melittin — the haemolytic toxin from bee venom — with a growth-factor-like peptide, used at low concentrations for skin renewal.

Melittin is a 26-amino-acid pore-forming peptide from Apis mellifera bee venom and one of the most toxic components in cosmetic use. This recombinant fusion combines melittin with sh-Oligopeptide-1, reducing but not eliminating melittin's inherent toxicity. Melittin causes cell membrane lysis (haemolysis) and significant inflammation at moderate concentrations. Under EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex III, bee venom and its components are subject to restrictions due to allergenicity and toxicity. Cosmetic use is permitted only at very low concentrations with mandatory labelling of bee-derived ingredients.

Function

HUMECTANT

Skin benefits

  • At very low concentrations, may stimulate skin renewal via controlled cell injury
  • Potential for improving skin texture through controlled wound-healing response

Known concerns

  • Melittin is a potent haemolytic agent — causes red blood cell and cell membrane destruction
  • Strong sensitisation and allergy risk, especially in individuals with bee product sensitivity
  • EU Annex III restricted due to allergenicity and toxicity concerns
  • Must be labelled as bee-derived ingredient under EU cosmetic labelling requirements
