About
Syringaldehyde is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Syringaldehyde (4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde) is a naturally occurring aromatic aldehyde with a sweet, floral-vanilla odor profile. The compound has been evaluated by the SCCS for cosmetic use and shows a favorable safety profile at typical fragrance concentrations. While aromatic aldehydes can theoretically cause skin sensitization, clinical data for syringaldehyde indicate low sensitization risk. It is not restricted under EU Annex II or III and is permitted as a fragrance and flavoring material. Minor skin irritation has been reported at high patch test concentrations but does not represent practical concern in cosmetic formulations.
Skin benefits
- Fragrance material with sweet, vanilla-floral characteristics
- Antioxidant properties noted in food applications
Known concerns
- Minor skin sensitization potential at very high concentrations
- Fragrance allergen declaration threshold
