About
Tris-Bht Mesitylene is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
TRIS-BHT MESITYLENE (or tris-BHT mesitylene) is a high-molecular-weight hindered phenolic antioxidant consisting of three BHT-like units bound to a mesitylene core. It is used primarily as an antioxidant stabilizer in cosmetic formulations and industrial products to prevent rancidity and oxidation. The EU Cosmetics Regulation does not list it in prohibited or restricted Annexes, though it shares structural features with BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) which has been subject to endocrine disruption review by SCCS. The higher molecular weight may reduce skin penetration compared to monomeric BHT, but the antioxidant class warrants ongoing monitoring.
Skin benefits
- Antioxidant for formulation stabilization
- Protects cosmetic products from oxidative rancidity
Known concerns
- Structurally related to BHT – endocrine disruption concern under SCCS review
- Possible skin sensitization in susceptible individuals
- Environmental concern (persistent, bioaccumulative potential)
