About
Pigment Red 112, a halogenated azo pigment classified as a skin sensitizer (H317) and environmental hazard (H411), permitted only in rinse-off cosmetics in the EU.
Pigment Red 112 (CI 12370) is a dichloro-trichlorophenyl-azo naphthalene carboxamide used as a colorant in rinse-off cosmetic products. Its GHS hazard profile shows H317 (skin sensitization), H411 (aquatic toxicity), and H413 (persistent aquatic hazard). Under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 Annex III, it is restricted to rinse-off products only. The presence of multiple chlorine substituents on the azo-coupled aromatic system reduces but does not eliminate concern about biotransformation to sensitizing intermediates.
Skin benefits
- Provides red coloration in rinse-off cosmetic formulations
Known concerns
- Classified H317 skin sensitizer (EU CLP Regulation 1272/2008)
- H411 aquatic toxic - harmful to aquatic organisms
