About
A polycyclic musk fragrance compound restricted in the EU due to environmental persistence and bioaccumulation concerns, limiting its use in cosmetic products.
Acetyl hexamethyl indan (AHMI, also known as 1,1,2,3,3-pentamethylindan-5-yl ethanone) is a synthetic polycyclic musk used as a fragrance ingredient. It is listed in EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 Annex III with restriction III/134, which limits its concentration in ready-to-use cosmetic products due to environmental concerns. The compound is persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic to aquatic organisms (H411). While not acutely toxic to humans, environmental restrictions significantly limit its use in EU-market cosmetics.
Known concerns
- EU Annex III restricted (III/134) - environmental reasons
- Aquatic chronic toxicity (H411)
- Persistent and bioaccumulative potential
