Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A fruity-floral fragrance ingredient — smells like roses and plums but is a known skin sensitiser. EU-restricted with strict concentration limits in products.
Alpha-Damascone (CAS 23726-94-5, PubChem CID 520506) is a ketone fragrance compound with a powerful fruity-floral rose/plum odour profile, listed under EU Annex III/157. The SCCS identified it as a significant skin sensitiser with a low NESIL (No Expected Sensitisation Induction Level). EU regulation imposes strict concentration limits: 0.02% in leave-on products and 0.1% in rinse-off products. It is structurally related to beta-damascone and damascenone, all derived from ionone chemistry. IFRA (International Fragrance Association) also restricts its use in fragrance compositions.
Known concerns
- Known skin sensitiser — EU Annex III restricted
- Strict concentration limits (0.02% leave-on, 0.1% rinse-off)
- Cross-sensitisation with other damascones possible
- Must be labelled when above threshold in products
