About
A gritty powder from soursop seeds used as a physical exfoliant and skin conditioner. Contains acetogenins which are potent mitochondrial toxins when ingested, but topical use at cosmetic levels is considered low-risk for most people.
Annona muricata (soursop) seedcake powder is obtained from the dried, ground residue left after oil extraction from seeds. The seeds contain Annonaceous acetogenins (annonacin, squamocin) which are neurotoxic when consumed chronically. Topically, the powder functions as a physical exfoliant. The acetogenins are poorly absorbed through intact skin, making topical use generally safe, though broken or compromised skin could allow greater absorption.
Function
Skin benefits
- Physical exfoliation removes dead skin cells
- Antioxidant polyphenols condition the skin

Known concerns
- Acetogenins are potent mitochondrial Complex I inhibitors
- Potential neurotoxicity with prolonged broken-skin exposure
- Seed extracts have been associated with atypical parkinsonism in endemic consumption regions
- May cause irritation on broken or sensitive skin
