A barium-based synthetic azo pigment used in cosmetic colourants; barium salts are subject to heavy-metal restrictions in the EU due to cardiac and neurological toxicity risk.
This compound is Pigment Red 51 (C.I. 15580), a barium-chelate azo dye. Barium salts are regulated under EU cosmetics regulation 1223/2009 due to their potential cardiac toxicity (barium ions affect potassium channels). While not currently on the prohibited Annex II list solely for being a barium salt, such metal-chelate colourants face growing regulatory scrutiny and are restricted or banned in several jurisdictions.
Known concerns
- Barium ion toxicity — cardiac and neurological effects
- Heavy metal residue restrictions in EU cosmetics
- Not permitted in oral or mucous membrane products
