About

A UV-B sunscreen filter once common in cosmetics but now largely restricted or banned in the EU due to photosensitivity and endocrine disruption concerns.

BUTYL PABA (butyl para-aminobenzoate, also known as padimate B) is an organic UV-B absorbing ester of PABA. It is listed under EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 Annex II, entry 167, which prohibits its use in cosmetic products. The prohibition is due to concerns about photosensitization potential, skin penetration, and preliminary findings suggesting endocrine-disrupting activity. While still permitted in some international markets at low concentrations, the EU has taken a precautionary approach and banned it from all cosmetic formulations.

Known concerns

  • EU Annex II/167 – prohibited in all cosmetic products
  • Photosensitization and skin penetration concerns
  • Potential endocrine-disrupting activity
  • Withdrawn from EU market due to safety concerns
