About

Chloroprednisone is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Chloroprednisone (9-chloro-11,17,21-trihydroxypregna-1,4-diene-3,20-dione) is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. Topical corticosteroids are regulated as medicinal products in the EU under Directive 2001/83/EC and are not permitted in cosmetic products. Unsupervised use of topical steroids can cause skin atrophy, telangiectasia, steroid rosacea, and systemic absorption effects. The compound is not listed in EU cosmetics regulation Annexes and is explicitly excluded from cosmetic use. Any presence in a cosmetics ingredient database likely reflects pharmaceutical/medicinal classification rather than actual cosmetic formulation inclusion.

Known concerns

  • Topical corticosteroid - prescription/medical supervision required
  • Prohibited in EU cosmetics
  • Risk of skin atrophy with unsupervised use
  • Systemic absorption concerns
  • Potential for steroid dependency
