About
Cinnamonitrile is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Cinnamonitrile (also called cinnamal nitrile or 3-phenyl-2-propenenitrile) is a nitrile analog of cinnamaldehyde, lacking the aldehyde group responsible for the strongest sensitization reactions of cinnamon-derived materials. The nitrile functionality reduces—but does not eliminate—the allergenic potential relative to cinnamaldehyde. It is not listed on any EU Annex as banned or restricted. However, the structural relationship to cinnamaldehyde (a known EU Annex III fragrance allergen) means cautious use is warranted. IFRA standards provide guidance on maximum use levels.
Known concerns
- Structural alert: related to cinnamaldehyde, a known fragrance sensitizer
- Limited specific cosmetic safety data compared to more studied fragrance materials
- Not individually restricted in EU, but regulatory analogy to cinnamaldehyde applies
