About
Membrane-bound cellular structures isolated from grapefruit (Citrus × aurantium) fruit, containing bioactive polysaccharides and flavonoid glycosides with antioxidant and moisturising properties.
Citrus paradisi vesicles are subcellular structures containing bioactives such as naringin, hesperidin, and grapefruit seed extract constituents. Grapefruit is known to contain furanocoumarins (bergamottin, 6',7'-dihydroxybergamottin) that inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes, though the vesicle fraction contains these at lower concentrations than peel or seed extracts. The EU does not specifically restrict grapefruit-derived vesicles in cosmetic formulations. Vesicular delivery systems themselves are an emerging cosmetic technology potentially enhancing ingredient penetration.
Skin benefits
- Flavonoid antioxidants neutralising free radicals
- Moisturisation via natural polysaccharides in vesicles
- Potential enhanced delivery of co-formulated actives
- Skin brightening and tone evening
Known concerns
- Residual furanocoumarin content may interact with topical or oral medications
- Photosensitisation potential (though lower than peel oil)
- Limited long-term safety data for vesicular delivery systems
