About

Clobetasol Propionate (usan)(jan) is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Clobetasol propionate (INN) is the 17-propionate ester of clobetasol, making it one of the most potent topical corticosteroids available in clinical practice (US Class I / UK Category 4). The esterification increases lipophilicity and skin penetration, enhancing both therapeutic effect and side-effect risk. EU SCCS has explicitly recommended against the use of corticosteroids in cosmetic products due to their pharmacological potency and atrophogenic effects on skin with chronic use. Hazard statements H335 (respiratory irritant), H360 (developmental toxicity — teratogenicity), H373 (systemic organ effects), and H413 (aquatic hazard) reflect the broad risk profile. Use in cosmetic formulations would be a regulatory violation in the EU.

Skin benefits

  • Potent anti-inflammatory (prescription pharmaceutical use only)

Known concerns

  • Prescription pharmaceutical — not permitted in cosmetic products
  • Developmental toxicity/teratogenicity (H360)
  • Skin atrophy and thinning with chronic topical use
  • Systemic effects including HPA axis suppression
  • Respiratory irritant (H335)
  • EU SCCS advises corticosteroids should not be in cosmetics
