About
Cumin seed powder — spice-derived ingredient with antioxidants. Watch out for phototoxicity from the oil fraction.
Cuminum cyminum (cumin) seed powder is milled spice used in traditional Asian and Middle Eastern skincare, providing phenolic antioxidants, flavonoids and small amounts of essential oil (mainly cuminaldehyde). The pure essential oil is IFRA-restricted because cuminaldehyde can be phototoxic, and EU CosIng flags it accordingly; whole ground seed powder carries less volatile content but the concern is not zero. No dedicated CIR monograph exists. At typical low cosmetic percentages in rinse-off products, tolerability is generally good.
Skin benefits
- Natural aromatic ingredient with phenolic antioxidants
- Traditional use in herbal skincare
- Imparts warm spice aroma to masks and cleansers
Known concerns
- Cumin essential oil is phototoxic and IFRA-restricted
- Whole seed powder is lower risk but can still carry photosensitising volatiles
- Aromatic compounds can be sensitising
