About
A mild amphoteric surfactant derived from decylamine, this ingredient is used as a cleansing and foam-boosting agent in cosmetic formulations and is generally regarded as safe at recommended concentrations.
Decylamine oxide (C10 amine N-oxide) is a zwitterionic surfactant that provides cleansing, foaming, and viscosity-controlling functions in skin care, shampoo, and facial cleanser formulations. It is listed in the EU CosIng database with no restrictions under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. At typical use concentrations (1–10%), it exhibits low irritation potential and is considered safe for use in rinse-off and leave-on cosmetic products. The tertiary amine N-oxide structure is stable under normal cosmetic storage conditions.
Skin benefits
- Effective cleansing and foaming agent for skin and hair
- Low irritation profile suitable for gentle formulations
- Contributes to viscosity and texture in surfactant systems
Known concerns
- May contain trace secondary amines as impurities
- Eye irritation possible at high concentrations (>10%)
