About
Dequalinium Chloride is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Dequalinium chloride (1,1′-decane-1,10-diylbis(4-amino-2-methylquinolinium) dichloride) is a broad-spectrum antiseptic belonging to the quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) class. In the EU it has limited permitted use as a preservative in certain cosmetic categories, subject to concentration restrictions under Annex V or III of the Cosmetics Regulation. QACs can cause contact dermatitis, mucous membrane irritation, and there are concerns about QAC resistance in bacterial strains.
Skin benefits
- Broad-spectrum antiseptic activity
- Preservative function in topical formulations
Known concerns
- Contact sensitizer — documented allergic contact dermatitis cases
- Mucous membrane and eye irritation at higher concentrations
- QAC resistance emerging in bacterial populations
