About
A very long-chain (C22) dialkyl quaternary ammonium conditioner that forms extremely durable films on hair and skin due to high lipophilicity.
Dibehenyldimonium methosulfate features two C22 behenyl groups on the nitrogen, making it one of the heaviest fatty quaternary ammonium conditioning agents used in cosmetics. The dual long-chain structure provides exceptional substantivity and water-repellent film formation. Listed in EU CosIng with no Annex II or III entries. The high molecular weight and lipophilicity raise concern for skin occlusion and potential comedogenicity. Methosulfate counterion is mild. The ingredient is primarily used in intensive hair treatments and protective leave-on formulations.
Skin benefits
- Highly durable conditioning film on hair fiber
- Severe-damage repair and protective barrier formation
- Moisture retention improvement at skin surface
Known concerns
- Risk of skin occlusion and pore clogging in leave-on products
- Build-up on skin/hair with repeated use
- Limited safety data specific to this molecule
- Potential environmental concern due to high lipophilicity
