Equol is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Equol (7-hydroxy-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-chroman) is a non-steroidal estrogen compound produced by gut bacterial biotransformation of the isoflavone daidzin from soy. It has significantly stronger estrogenic activity than its precursors and binds to both ER-alpha and ER-beta receptors. Its use in cosmetics is relatively recent and it does not appear in EU CosIng with specific restrictions. However, the endocrine activity of equol warrants caution — its estrogenic potency is considerably higher than other commonly used phytoestrogens such as genistein or daidzein. Safety data for chronic topical application are limited.
