About
A rare-earth lanthanide salt with no recognised cosmetic function and no safety review. Better avoided in leave-on cosmetics.
Erbium Chloride (ErCl3, CAS 10138-41-7 anhydrous; the hexahydrate is CAS 10025-75-9) is a pink lanthanide salt used in laser/optical materials and as a laboratory reagent. It has no CIR or SCCS opinion supporting cosmetic use, no FDA monograph status, and no recognised functional category in the standard cosmetic literature. Laboratory safety data sheets classify lanthanide chlorides as skin and eye irritants (GHS Cat. 2) and as harmful if swallowed. Lanthanides are persistent in aquatic environments and there is growing concern about anthropogenic gadolinium and related rare-earth releases. Marketing as a "rare-earth skin conditioner" is supplier-driven and unsupported by independent safety or efficacy data. Default position is to avoid in leave-on cosmetics.
